Indian festivals are always associated with legends. Sometimes they are in the two famous epics – Ramayana and Mahabharata. Ram, Sita (his beloved) and Lakhman (his brother) were on exile. They were sent to the forest for 14 years by Ram’s father, Dasharath. After his victory of good versus evil, Ram returned home to Ayodhya. Ram was favourite prince amongst his subjects who lit numerous oil-filled diyas to welcome them. This was the first day of Diwali or Deepawali. This occasion depends on the lunar calendar and it is celebrated on Amavashya (new moon). The exact date of this festival changes every year.
